All but two members of the Executive Committee are elected by the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS), Division of the History of Science (DHS) for four years on the occasion of the International Congresses of the History of Science. The last congress took place in Mexico City, 8-14 July 2001. Two members are elected by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for four years on the occasion of the International Congresses of Mathematics (ICM). The next congress will take place in Beijing, 20-28 August 2002. Every country where history of mathematics is inquired into or taught is represented by at least one representative in the ICHM. The members inform the Executive Committee about whatever concerns history of mathematics in their country.

    Tasks and projects

    Historia Mathematica is the official journal of the ICHM. It publishes original research on the history of the mathematical sciences in all periods and cultures.

    The goal of all activities of the ICHM is to promote history of mathematics as a scientific discipline. As a consequence:

    1. the ICHM organizes scientific symposia, especially on the occasion of the International Congresses of the History of Science;

    2. it publishes a World Directory of the historians of mathematics. A new edition is in press;

    3. it awards the Kenneth O. May Medal to historians of mathematics for outstanding contributions to the history of mathematics, and that on the occasion of the International Congresses of the History of Science;

    4. it is establishing a photo archive which will comprehend photographs of mathematicians to complement the collection already housed at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut in Oberwolfach, Germany;

    5. an ICHM Dictionary on History of Mathematics edited by John Fauvel, England, continues to progress.
