IMU Bulletin no. 45, December, 1999

    Commission on Development and Exchange

Report prepared by Herb Clemens, Secretary of CDE, 1999.

In 1999 the CDE dispersed US$8700 in research travel grants to individual mathematicians in developing countries, funding roughly 50% of the applications it received. It also dispersed US $8700 in support of research conferences in developing countries, funding roughly 75% of the applications it received.

Administrative costs for the year were US$3137, a remarkably low figure considering that 1999 was the year of the once-every-four-year face-to-face meeting of the members of the CDE. This meeting produced several policy decisions moving CDE into a more active role in supporting longer-term projects in mathematics research and advanced education in developing countries.

Additionally CDE provided US$4000 in project support to the MUSA regional research/advanced education project in Southern Africa. (CDE received a dedicated two-year grant of US$14,000 from ICSU for this project, from which this project support was taken.)
