IMU Circular Letter 03/98

    IMU EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The Executive Committee proposes the following slate for its successor Executive Committee (1999-2002):

      President:  J. Palis  (Brazil)
      Vice-Presidents:  S.Donaldson
      S. Mori
        (United Kingdom)
        (Japan)
      Secretary:  P. Griffiths  (USA)
      Members:  V. Arnold
      J.M.Bismut
      B.Engquist
      M. Raghunathan
      V. Strassen
        (Russia)
        (France)
        (Sweden)
        (India)
        (Germany)
      ex-officio:  D. Mumford  (Past President)

The selection of these names has been guided by a) geographical distribution, b) coverage of diverse areas of mathematics and c) distinction in research.

We wish to stress that we have two mathematicians from the Americas, two from Asia, the balance from Europe. A point noted by the Executive committee, meeting without the candidate for President being present, is that this is only the second proposal ever for President from outside Europe or the US (Chandrasekharan was President in 1971-74).

The fields in which these candidates work are, roughly:

        Dynamical systems (Palis),
        Algebraic and differential geometry (Griffiths),
        Differential Topology, differential geometry (Donaldson),
        Algebraic geometry (Mori),
Singularity theory, differential equations, symplectic geometry (Arnold),
Probability theory and non-linear analysis (Bismut),
        Numerical analysis (Engquist),
Lie groups and their discrete subgroups (Raghunathan),
        Complexity theory (Strassen).

To address (c) above and provide further background, enclosed are brief CV's of the candidates.
