Devanagari for TeX                                         Installation Notes

** Please note: Some characters in the dvng fonts have changed. Please
   replace all existing dvng fonts with the newer versions.


1. To install the devnag package from th CVS source copy all files in the
   distribution to the following locations in your local texmf tree.

   velthuis/doc/*              ->  local/doc/velthuis/
   velthuis/fonts/mf/*         ->  local/fonts/source/velthuis/
   velthuis/fonts/tfm/*        ->  local/fonts/tfm/velthuis/
   velthuis/fonts/type1/*.pfb  ->  local/fonts/type1/velthuis/
   velthuis/fonts/type1/*.afm  ->  local/fonts/afm/velthuis/
   velthuis/input/*.fd         ->  local/tex/latex/velthuis/
   velthuis/input/dev.sty      ->  local/tex/latex/velthuis/
   velthuis/input/dev209.sty   ->  local/tex/latex/velthuis/
   velthuis/input/dnmacs.tex   ->  local/tex/generic/velthuis/
   velthuis/input/dvng.map     ->  local/dvips/config/

   If you have the package from CTAN, the files are already placed in
   directories conforming to the TeX Directory Standard so that the package
   can just be unpacked to your texmf-local tree.

   In any case, before you update the texmf database, you should delete the
   previous version in order to prevent potential conflict. You can find the
   directories by running the following commands:

   kpsewhich dvng10.tfm
   kpsewhich dvng10.mf
   kpsewhich dvng10.pfb
   kpsewhich dnmacs.tex -progname=tex
   kpsewhich devnag.sty -progname=latex
   kpsewhich dvng.map -progname=updmap

   Remove the previous version from your disk.

2. Refresh the texmf database!

3. Generate a binary executable of the preprocessor. NOTE: If you're
   if you're running a Windows system, the distribution includes a
   DOS/Windows executable called devnag.exe in  the bin/ directory.
   The C source code is also in the same directory.

4. In order to use the Postscript Type 1 dvng fonts with DVIPS and pdfTeX, it
   is on most distributions sufficient to issue the command

   updmap --enable MixedMap dvng.map

   If your distribution lacks updmap, you must do it manually. Add "p
   +dvng.map" to the DVIPS configuration file config.ps. Also, if you use
   pdfTeX add "map +dvng.map" to pdftex.cfg.

5. Run the devnag preprocessor on the sample files misspaal.dn and
   examples.dn, and LaTeX on the misspaal.tex and examples.tex output
   files to test the installation.
